New mammography machines and diagnostic tools support early detection and treatment close to home

Thanks to the generous support of community donors, Southlake added three new, state-of-the-art mammography machines in 2024. With this new technology, Southlake expanded its screening capacity to serve 1,500 more patients each year. In total, more than 14,300 women received a mammogram at Southlake last year.
Regular cancer screenings play a crucial role in detecting cancer early, leading to better health outcomes. As of October 2024, publicly-funded mammograms are available for women ages 40 and older. Women at high risk for breast cancer and between 30 to 69 years old can also contact their primary care provider to be refer to the Ontario Breast Cancer Screening Program's High Risk Program for a mammogram with an MRI or ultrasound every year.
Southlake provides mammograms through the Ontario Breast Screening Program, as well as by referral from primary care providers. The new mammography machines will help ensure more timely access to screening and diagnostics for women in northern York Region and southern Simcoe County. Two of the new machines also include biopsy capabilities that reduce wait times and improve diagnostic precision.
Beyond breast cancer screening, Southlake introduced new innovations to support the detection and treatment of reproductive cancers. The MyoSure System allows for the removal of fibroids and polyps in a minimally invasive procedure that preserves healthy uterine tissue. This helps support faster recovery and improved fertility outcomes for about 200 patients annually. The hospital also invested in the MOLLI 2® System, a Canadian-made wire-free breast localization tool that offers a more comfortable, accurate and less invasive option than traditional procedures.
With the need for cancer care expected to increase, Southlake is investing in technologies that improve the patient experience and support early detection. These advancements reflect Southlake’s commitment to delivering personalized, leading edge care, close to home, in a setting where women feel safe and supported.
