In partnership with POGO, Southlake Health’s paediatric oncology clinic brings expert, compassionate cancer care closer to home.
During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, Southlake was honoured to welcome Premier Doug Ford, Minister Sylvia Jones, Minister Stephen Lecce, and MPP Dawn Gallagher-Murphy to see firsthand the impact of having paediatric cancer care, close to home.
When a child needs cancer care, having access to care closer to home is critical. Since 2009, Southlake has partnered with the Paediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) as a designated satellite clinic, providing life-saving cancer care to children, right here in our community. In collaboration with centres like Toronto’s SickKids, Southlake’s paediatric oncology clinic ensures that young patients in Newmarket and surrounding areas can receive expert treatment without the burden of frequent travel to Toronto.
Since opening, Southlake’s paediatric oncology clinic has grown to accommodate nearly 140 visits each month. Today, the healthcare team provides accessible, compassionate care for children and families, reducing the disruption that often comes with serious illness.
“Families no longer need to make long trips for check-ups and follow-up appointments,” said Dr. van Schaik. “Kids could come in for treatment in the morning, then go to school and be with their friends for the rest of the day. These brave families had a chance to heal closer to home, surrounded by their support system.”
The visit concluded with a clinic tour led by Southlake’s dedicated frontline staff – the heart of this high-impact program. Their expertise, empathy, and commitment to patients embody Southlake Health’s Pride in People – a value that drives the hospital’s mission to deliver exceptional care, every step of the way.
